In 1895 a brick factory was built in Groenlo, a few kilometers away.
Because clay was needed to make bricks, the clay pits were dug here.
Until 1931 dugging was done by hand, then with a dredger.
The loam was brought to the factory with a locomotive, followed by lorries.
Until 1975 bricks were made in Groenlo, after that it was no longer profitable.
The Leemputten nature park opened here in 1978. From that moment on, people could enjoy nature here and rent a pedal boat.
In 2006 the park was sold to the government and pedal boating was over.
In 2010 the recreation part of de Leemputten was sold to a family here nearby.
Now it is not only pedal boating anymore. There is a small restaurant, a beach, playgrounds for the children and so on.
