This is an old hermitage, built originally in the 18th century. It has a sober design, recently changed when some modern elements were added. This took place in the 90's, when the nearby sanctuary was built in futurist style. The Church decided to build a new structure to host the commemorations of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, also known as Festa da Mãe Soberana, which take place every year on the 5th of May. This is the most important pilgrimage in Portugal south of Fátima.
Inside the highlight is the altarpiece, also from the 18th century, in Rococo style. On it there is a representation of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, which dates from the 17th century.
Accordingly to a plaque existent on the front facade, the hermitage was visited in 1961 by the cardinal of Lisbon, Dom Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, a powerful man, a true Portuguese Richelieu who as a close friend of António Oliveira Salazar, the man who led the country from 1926 to 1968. The two men met in their university years in Coimbra.
