The Chamarel Waterfall is one of the best known tourist sites in Mauritius for its spectacular beauty and for being the highest on the island, with 100 meters of altitude . This natural wonder that is located in the heart of the Geopark of the Land of the Seven Colors , amid dense vegetation, is fed by two different rivers: the St Denis river and the Viande Salée river. Imposing, the Chamarel Waterfall rises from the top of a basalt cliff plunging into an oval basin before flowing into a 6-kilometer canyon bordered by tropical forests to Baie-du-Cap.
It is quite a spectacle to contemplate this impressive waterfall, not only because of its altitude, but also because of the amount of water, especially in the rainy season: at a rate of more than 40 thousand m3 per minute . And of course because of the amazing landscape in which it is found: lava flows from two different periods . A second layer dating from 1.7 to 3.5 million years is superimposed on the basalt layer at the foot of the Chamarel Cascade, which dates from 8 to 10 million years ago.
On your visit to the Land of the Seven Colors, be sure to visit the beautiful Chamarel Waterfall, photogenic even if the day is not spectacular.
