In 2001, Cary became the first municipality in the state to pump reclaimed water to homes and businesses for non-potable uses such as irrigation, manufacturing processes, industrial cooling, non-residential toilet flushing and dust control at construction sites. The main benefit for residents and businesses is saving money, as reclaimed water usage rates are lower than normal potable water rates (source and link for more information: (visit link)

The manhole features the year 1871 when Cary was officially incorporated. The four symbols are a house, church, a torch and a school. These represent a municipal commitment - serving citizens, religious freedom, enlightenment and education (source and link for more information: (visit link)
