Of course, the cenotaph's title should read "Skidmores in Texas", as the apostrophe is unnecessary, and the text reads:

Lineage [Thomas 1789, David A 1820, Edwin Lee 1864, Samuel A 1895, Edwin L 1923, Scott A 1949]

Thomas Skidmore came to Texas in 1839, three years after his brother Abraham. He traveled with his wife Mary Reed Skidmore, three daughters (Cynthia, Eliza Ann and Mary Jane) and nine of his ten sons (William Edward, Schuyler B, John, David Anderson, Stephen H, Joseph B, Murdock M, Gaius Kibby and Matthew). They settled in the location of Sylvan. They farmed, ran a gristmill, helped build churches and schools in the community. Matthew and Gaius Kibby served in the 9th Texas Infantry in the Civil War. Thomas died in 1859 and his wife Mary in 1865. They are buried with their sons Stephen, died 1842, and John, died 1858, in a clump of trees near this very cemetery on Thomas' land grant from the State of Texas. This marker is to remember them and is placed on this site by Scott Anthony Skidmore, family historian.
