An mid-19th century Spang Melodeon, a small organ popular in the 19th century which similar to the harmonium, is on display at the Erie Canal Museum. A plaque on the wall to the left of the melodeon describes its history. It is inscribed:
Spang Melodeon
Manufactured in Syracuse by Xavier Spang,
Mid-19th Century
This beautiful melodeon was manufactured in Syracuse
during the Erie Canal era. The melodeon is currently non-
functional as a musical instrument but the Erie Canal Museum
is seeking to restore it to full playability.
Xavier Spang was a very successful organ and melodeon builder
in Syracuse during the mid-19th Century. Spang began
manufacturing top quality melodeons in 1860 at 64-66 North
Salina Street, but, due to the immense popularity of these
instruments, the firm expanded to a larger factory on Noxon
Street in 1874, where under the name of "The Cabinet Organ
Company' they also built organs, Spang was out of business
before the turn-of-the century.
Donated to the Erie Canal Museum by James and Lisa Kimball.
