Here we have a triple then and now situation, as it was possible to obtain pictures showing three stages of evolution. Before 1940 there were factories on the spot. In the late 30's a new movie theater was built, being inaugurated in 1940. The intermediate picture shown is precisely from the inauguration day. And finally, an image of the theater today.
This is one of the few vintage theaters still existent in Lisbon. It was built on a spot where before one could see old factories. It was inaugurated in 1940, with about 1000 seats. The opening took place with the presence of important persons, like the mayor and the minister of education, and the screened movie was "You can't take it with you" (1938) directed by Frank Capra.
It was shut down in 1981 and reopened in 1990 as a play theater. Nowadays it's run by a theater company, "A Barraca" and recently had works to add a second stage.
