from bieratlas.nl:

The history of the Hertog Jan brewery has not always been positive. March 2, 1915, Arcen. Stoombierbrouwerij de Vriendenkring is founded by 4 brewers, who joined forces. What made the brewery quite unique at the time was the use of a steam engine. The brewery was also characterized by the fact that they only produce bottom-fermented beer. At that time it was customary to produce top-fermented beer. At that time, the beer was put in wooden barrels and swing-top bottles. But during the Second World War the brewery had a hard time. They had to start rebuilding the brewery. There are also financial problems, as sales were very low. This is followed by many acquisitions of various parties. In 1993 the name was changed to Oranjeboom Bierbrouwerij. And then the brewery was taken over again, this time by Interbrew Nederland, which now belongs to the AB Inbev group. In 1998 the brewery was given the name it still bears today, Hertog Jan Brewery.
