This house appears to be one of a pair of similarly designed Federal cape cottages built side by side. The cottages are five bays long and two wide with a central door. This one has been altered by the addition of siding and new windows, but it retains the two interior chimneys and roof framed without returns or raking cornice. The tight profile and low shape suggest an economical method of housing a family and keeping the difficult New England weather out.
William and Thomas Moore, who lived here first, were the town's first tailors. They may have built the side by side houses. Another Moore, John, was active in 1797 as a hatter. The making of hats was an active business in town in the last years of the 18th century and the early years of the next. This end of the village seems to have attracted several craftsmen who had retail space either in their homes or in small manufacturing shops on the same lot.
