CHALLENGE
The Juliana bridge in Zaanstad was in a poor technical condition. As a result, the bridge was no longer suitable for heavy traffic. In addition, the artwork had to be made suitable for the future waterway classification CEMT-V. This prompted the province of North Holland to replace the construction with a new architecturally designed Julianabrug. The bridge is in a unique location, in a spacious bend of the Zaan with a view of the world heritage of Zaanse Schans.

SOLUTION
Antea Group has been involved in the realization of the Juliana Bridge from start to finish. Antea Group was responsible for the research phase, the schedule of requirements, preliminary design, final design, specifications, tendering and supervision of the implementation. The biggest challenge was to translate the visionary design of the architect of Royal HaskoningDHV and the requirements of the managers into a feasible design. This required complex calculation and drawing work. The construction of the V-shaped pillars and the concealment of the movable part of the bridge were particularly challenging in terms of engineering.

RESULTS
In the summer of 2009 the new Juliana bridge was opened at Zaandijk. The two hundred meter long construction consists of two separate decks, one for motorized traffic and one for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge is movable at the main passage. The bridge is subtly and carefully fitted and skims over the water with a smooth line. Instead of striking arch or garden structures, graceful, sleek concrete pillars have been chosen. Thanks in part to Antea Group's technical solutions, the bridge is an asset to the environment in terms of design and functionality. This was underlined by the awarding of the National Concrete Award (2009), the European ECSN Award (2010) and Route Plume Rijkswaterstaat (2011) to this project.
