In 1889, in order to eliminate much of the traffic congestion on Main Street caused by an on-grade crossing, construction of a retaining wall for an elevated railroad crossing was constructed. It was based on designs proposed in 1883 by H. H. Richardson. In 1925, it was replaced by the present Springfield Union Station. Before the station was renovated the main entrance was build on Lyman Street. This entrance is decorated with the stone trim from the old H.H. Richardson station. In 2012 a $75,000,00 renovation began which was completed in 2017. A second entrance was built on Frank B. Murray Street.

Springfield Union Station now as a serves as an intermodal transportation hub. It continues to be an Amtrak train station with both the north-south service connecting New Haven, CT to northern Vermont as well as east-west service from Boston, MA to Chicago, IL.

The station has 6 tracks, 3 (tracks 1, 2 and 2a) serving the Boston & Albany Main Line and another 3 (tracks 4, 6 and 8) serving the Amtrak Springfield Line. The Amtrak tracks are independent from the other tracks which are maintained by CSX as part of the Boston & Albany Line.

When the renovations were complete both Peter Pan and Greyhound Bus Lines moved their operation to Springfield Union Station. Also the local Pioneer Valley Transportation Authority (PVTA) uses the station for local bus service serving cities of western Massachusetts.

The railroad station and the retaining wall are part of the Downtown Springfield Railroad Historic District.
