Well-maintained pioneer cemetery located northeast of Cobourg in Northumberland County. Earliest recorded burial was John Adams in 1832. There are approximately 100 markers.
There is an historical marker near the entrance to the cemetery indicating the name. There is no other signage.
Marker text, erected by Haldimand Township, reads:
GILLILAND CEMETERY
The first burial on record in the cemetery was John Adams in 1832. In 1860, the site was conveyed by James Gilliland to Levi, Samuel, Solon and William Massey, almond Richardson,Henry Winter, Isaac Fraser, James Deviney and George Edgecomb, Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada for the sum of five shillings. A frame building, known as "Massey's Episcopal Church" was constructed at a cost of 700 dollars. The first Minister was John Hill. The church was dismantled sometime after 1884 when the Wesleyan and Episcopal Methodist Churches became the Methodist Church.
