US Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Diplomat. He was elected as a Jacksonian Republican to represent South Carolina's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1821 until his resignation in 1825. Appointed as United States Minister to Mexico, he served in that diplomatic post from 1825 until 1829. In 1837 he was appointed as Secretary of War in the cabinet of President Martin Van Buren, serving until 1841. He introduced to the United States the poinsettia flower plant, which was named in his honor.
