The Florence Congregational Church (FCC) had its origin in 1857 Sunday school for the First Congregational Church of Northampton, which met outdoors in Florence, MA. At that time members of the congregation would travel 2½ miles, as the crow flies, to attend services in Northampton. John Payson Williston was the leader of 26 founding members that built heir own church in Florence, a thriving industrial community.

The foundation for the new church was laid in 1861 and the church was completed in 1863 at a cost of $4,000. It was designed in the Italianate-Queen Anne styles by architect William Fenno Pratt of Northampton, MA. The 2½ story white clapboard building has a gabled roof. The north facing side has a central entrance with a double door with a rounded arched lintel on top which framed by a pair of 1½ story high windows with matching rounded arched lintels. Above the entrance is a circular starburst rose window. The sides have five bays each with two story high windows with rounded arched lintels.
