To reach this scenic overlook you must park at the end of Mangatepopo Road and take a short walk along the start of the Tongariro Crossing track until you have reached the Mangatepopo Hut turnoff. You will be surrounded by snow-covered mountains in winter with close views of Mts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. DO NOT be tempted to walk any further unless you are properly equipped with appropriate warm clothing and footwear, food and drink etc as this is the start of the long strenuous Tongariro Crossing walk, which should not be attempted in winter. However, up to this point near these co-ordinates, you are safe following the valley floor with light snow cover in winter, as far as the signposted Mangatepopo tramping hut to enjoy the awesome mountain scenery. It is simply breathtaking, and usually very quiet in winter, you will feel like you are the only people in this winter wonderland. Return along the same path to your vehicle.
In the summer months, you will need to avoid the morning rush of hundreds of hikers, who will be setting out early to tramp across this famous one-way Tongariro Crossing track which continues over the mountain ridges.
