Skiles Tavern gets approved for sidewalk cafe.

HOLLAND — Another downtown business will expand offerings to the sidewalk in an effort to provide service to more customers during the pandemic.
In a special meeting held via Zoom on Thursday, July 23, the city of Holland Downtown Design Review Board approved an application from Skiles Tavern for a sidewalk cafe.
The tavern, located at 154 E. Eighth St., intends to use frontage along Eighth Street and Columbia Avenue. The boundaries of the cafe will be marked by planters.
During the meeting, Chairman Rob Walcott noted the current measures put in place for the pandemic offer opportunities to reexamine how downtown Holland uses its streets and parking spaces.
In May, Holland’s Downtown Development Authority and Principal Shopping District boards voted to make it easier for downtown shops and restaurants to spread out their shopping and dining experience into the sidewalk and parking spaces in front of their storefronts.

The move is intended to give downtown businesses the flexibility to use that outdoor space to accommodate more diners and shoppers while keeping a safe distance between customers at their businesses.
While downtown businesses still need to file an application to expand into the space in front of their businesses, the process is more straightforward.
So far, outdoor cafes have also been approved at Hops at 84 East, Poquito, Market Zero and The Curragh.
