"Asunción González Vázquez yesterday received a new tribute from the Ourense Council, which seeks to symbolize all the women from Ourense who are victims of male violence. His was a public death. One shot, in the middle of Good Friday in 1891, in a crowded Maior square in Ourense. Perhaps for this reason, because it was impossible to hide - and despite the fact that the first chronicles spoke of a fortuitous firing of the pistol carried by her murderer -, this young seamstress has the painful honor of opening a list that, unfortunately, continues growing.
"She was the first on record, but how many were there before, perhaps more secretly, who suffered the same violence at that time when you couldn't say anything, you couldn't report it, if a man beat you or insulted you?" , Marcos Pardo reflected this Thursday. He was the author of the documentary video on the history of "poor Asuncion", as the inscription on the tomb where her remains rest.
