In the mais facade of the City Hall of Ourence there is a plaque that pay tribute to Asunción González Vázquez that the first victim of gender violence that is documented in the city of Ourense. In 1891, at the height of Easter, she was murdered by her alleged partner in the middle of Praza Maior.

The plaque reads:

Asuncion Gonzalez Vazquez
primera vitima violencia machista declarada documentada asasinada nesta praza 1891

Asuncion Gonzalez Vazquez
first victim of sexist violence declared and documented murdered in this praza 1891

Asunción González Vázquez

"Asunción González Vázquez yesterday received a new tribute from the Ourense Council, which seeks to symbolize all the women from Ourense who are victims of male violence. His was a public death. One shot, in the middle of Good Friday in 1891, in a crowded Maior square in Ourense. Perhaps for this reason, because it was impossible to hide - and despite the fact that the first chronicles spoke of a fortuitous firing of the pistol carried by her murderer -, this young seamstress has the painful honor of opening a list that, unfortunately, continues growing.
"She was the first on record, but how many were there before, perhaps more secretly, who suffered the same violence at that time when you couldn't say anything, you couldn't report it, if a man beat you or insulted you?" , Marcos Pardo reflected this Thursday. He was the author of the documentary video on the history of "poor Asuncion", as the inscription on the tomb where her remains rest. The video could be seen this Thursday, in the plenary hall, during the institutional act organized on the occasion of the 8M attended by representatives of different social groups and in which the statement agreed by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces for this date was read . A statement that speaks of maintaining commitment in the fight for equality, of promoting decent employment as a method to promote women's independence and empowerment; and that it demands for local entities more means to continue working against violence against women.
Then came the discovery of the plaque dedicated to Asunción on the facade of the dedicated consistory. «She was killed by a man who did not accept, who did not understand, that she did not want anything with him, because she had another boyfriend. Stories like these are still repeated. It is a shame, "warned Marcos Pardo, who thanked the collaboration of both the family and the Council of Ourense to serve as an alert to new generations."
