Description:
From Find A Grave-Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman. Educated locally in Ohio, he learned the printer's trade. In 1845 he moved to Kenton where he published a newspaper. He enlisted 5 days after the Fort Sumter loss, becoming Colonel of the 82nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1862. He fought at the Battles of Second Manassas (Bull Run 2), Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, being severely wounded in the chest at Gettysburg. Appointed Brigadier General, US Volunteers. on January 12, 1865, he was with General William T. Sherman in Georgia and the Carolinas. After the war he was a railroad commissioner in Ohio, a US Congressman from 1881 to 1885, and Ohio Secretary of State from 1885 to 1889. He died of heart failure in Kenton on January, 1892, supposedly resulting from his wound at Gettysburg. He was 64.
