The John Deere No. 4 Big Sickle Mower was the last of the John Deere horse drawn models. The wooden drawbar, for two or four horses, is unattached from the front of this mower. The sickle bar cutter appears to be about 6 feet long. A set of gears transformed the rotary motion of the main axle into the reciprocating action of the cutting blade.
The sickle mower was used to cut grass, timothy, and alfalfa to feed livestock.
