This simple grave marker simply notes that Joe Earl was "slain by Indians" and gives the year of his death, May 12, 1870. The U.C.V. on the headstone may stand for "United Confederate Veterans," an organization not formally created until 1889 but associated with Mr. Earl on this grave marker, which was set long after his death. This Find-a-grave page for Joe mentions a Confederate connection.

Joe, on horseback, was riding well ahead of a wagon driven by two brothers when he was surrounded and killed by a band of Kiowa Indians. The brothers, unable to help him, unhitched the two horses from the wagon and were able to escape. They (and others) returned the next day and buried Joe near where he had fallen; his grave may have been the first here and established this cemetery.
