In 1913, the City of Winnipeg requested and received a grant from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie for the construction of two branch libraries. Cornish Library was designed by local architect Samuel F. Peters. Construction began in 1914 and the branch opened in June 1915. The library is a municipal heritage site.
Plans for a major renovation were begun in 2012, with the library closing for construction in May 2018 and re-opening upon completion in the summer of 2020.
