On the front of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church on Dutch Road in Fairview, Pennsylvania, a verse from the Acts of the Apostles is carved into a stone with the church's name and coat of arms. The verse, from the King James translation of the sixth chapter and eighth verse of the Acts of the Apostles says, "Stephen, full of faith and power did great wonders and miracles among the people."

The sixth and seventh chapters of the Acts of the Apostles describe Saint Stephen being brought before the council of the high priest, admonishing them, and ultimately being stoned to death. The story concludes by stating, "And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:60). Stephen is therefore considered the first Christian martyr.
