This crucifix is located near the entrance of Calvary Cemetery, on West Lake Road in Erie, PA. The crucifix also has statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John standing next to it. The base of the cross has a scripture verse etched into it: "If I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all things to myself" (John 12:32). This verse is from a discourse Jesus gave after entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. In the verse, St. John added the parenthetical note, "Now this he said, signifying what death he should die" (verse 33).

The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated by Christians as the Mother of the Word Incarnate, Our Lord Jesus Christ. As a young girl betrothed to St. Joseph, Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she would conceive a son by the Holy Ghost, who would be the Son of God. In humble obedience to the divine messenger, Mary replied, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word." In Bethlehem, her Son was born and was adored by shepherds and kings. As is known throughout the world, this Son, Jesus Christ, went on to suffer on the cross and rise again, offering salvation to the world through Him. Mary, who stood by the cross, is sometimes referred to as Our Mother of Sorrows. Today, Mary is venerated as the Mother of God and Queen of Heaven.

St. John was one of Christ's twelve Apostles and the author of the fourth Gospel included in the New Testament. He was the "Beloved Disciple" who sat next to Christ at the Last Supper and stood by the cross during the crucifixion of Christ. It is believed that he outlived all of the other Apostles and was the only one not to die a martyrs death. Four books of the New Testament are attributed to him, including a Gospel, three Epistles, and the Apocolypse (Revelation). His feast day is celebrated on December 27th.
