The museum was created in August 1960. It was installed in its current location in 1966.
The collection is divided in two wider areas: art from the colonial and republica eras and contemporary art.
Good examples of artists with works on display are Leonardo Flores and Melchor Pérez de Holguín, both from the so called "School of La Paz".
A new area has temporary exhibits on display. It has an independent entrance and the access to this space is for free.
