The Fort near Uithoorn is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. People occasionally speak of Fort Amstelhoek. The fort is located in the village of Amstelhoek in the municipality of De Ronde Venen, and can be seen from the N196. There is a moat around the fortification.

Build and task
From 1880, 45 forts were built around Amsterdam. Fort Amstelhoek first consisted of earth walls, and in 1887 a Royal Decree approved the construction of a fortification. This was expanded with bombproof buildings between 1909 and 1911 and an anti-aircraft department was established in 1917. The occupation then consisted of 321 men.

Fort near Uithoorn is a standard model B fort from the second construction phase of the Stelling. The lifting domes are connected to the main building by bomb-proof corridors. The concrete lift dome buildings are still intact. At many other forts of the Defense Line, the lifting turrets were blown up by the Germans during the Second World War to remove the steel armor and use it for their own weapons industry. Furthermore, relatively much of the original interior is still present, such as the wooden partitions between the rooms, the telegraph room, the kitchen, the iron removal installation for the water and the laundry room for the soldiers. The washroom door was bricked up for a long time and the interior has been preserved.

About Defence Line of Amsterdam:
The UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Defence Line of Amsterdam (in Dutch named Stelling van Amsterdam), is a 135 km ring of fortifications around Amsterdam. It has of 42 forts that are 10–15 km from the centre and lowlands, which can easily be flooded in time of war. The flooding was designed to give a depth of about 30 cm, too little for boats to cross. Any buildings within 1 km of the line had to be made of wood so that they could be burnt and the obstruction removed.

The Stelling van Amsterdam was constructed between 1880 and 1920. The invention of the aeroplane and tank made the forts obsolete almost as soon as they were finished. Many of the forts now are under the control of both the town councils and the nature department. They may be visited by the public, and admission is free on Monuments Day, the second Saturday in September.
