Opposant l'Union française au Viêt Minh, le conflit aboutit, à la suite des accords de Genève, à la fin de la Fédération indochinoise et à la partition du territoire vietnamien en deux États rivaux : République démocratique du Viêt Nam et Sud-Viêt Nam. La guerre d’Indochine fit plus de 500 000 victimes et fut suivie par la guerre du Viêt Nam (1955-1975).
