It’s an idea that is starting to take hold and is attracting investors anyway. A Parisian company has developed an ecological process to combat erosion with the creation of an amazing material, the Geocorail.

It’s coral, without being coral. It looks like cement but it’s not cement. But this mysterious material could well become a familiar element of our coasts. It was in 2012 that the Geocorail was developed.

This "coral" is actually an aggregate of sediments, rocks, sand, limestone, created by an electrophysical reaction (and not biological like natural coral). In short, a kind of “natural concrete”, sums up Philippe Andréani, managing director of the company Géocorail. Geocorail’s innovation is as simple as a small electrical pulse.

(Photo: Géocorail) "We put a wire mesh in the sand, no more complex than a chicken coop type wire mesh, which we connect to a power plant," he explains. The current produced is of the order of a volt: you can walk on the fence without feeling anything, it's safe. The combined action of the ions contained in seawater and the electric current makes it possible to capture calcium and magnesium. This creates a deposit on the fence. By maintaining the current, the slab thickens thanks to sediment, sand ... "

Discovered by chance

The Geocorail was discovered by chance during work on cathodic protection, that is to say the protection of metals against corrosion. But very quickly, the interest of the material was revealed in the fight against coastal erosion. "Reinforcing dikes, bottom of cliffs, engineering structures, becomes essential with global warming and therefore the phenomenon of ocean dilation and more severe weather phenomena. We hope to bring an additional tool to preserve our coasts. A welcome tool so many communes have embarked on a real headlong rush to reinforce their dikes in an emergency at each storm.

The Geocorail is for the long term. It takes twelve to eighteen months to generate a Geocorail slab using this very environmentally friendly process. "We don't use chemicals, barges or backhoes for the facilities," says Philippe Andréani. And unlike cement, the production of which produces a lot of CO2, the Geocorail traps and stores carbon. In addition, the Geocorail has self-healing properties and regenerates itself over time.

Convince customers

Before embarking on the industrialization and marketing of the material, it must be tested and convinced. Financially, the affair seems to have started well. Géocorail persuaded the Truffle Capital investment fund (co-founder of Carmat, the French company that launched the first artificial heart) to invest 2 million euros in the project. The venture capital company even played its interpersonal skills: the former Minister of Industry Eric Besson and the academician Erik Orsenna have just joined the board of directors of the young company. A sign that the project is building investor confidence. It remains to attract customers.

"Commercial development has not yet started, tempers Philippe Andréani. We want to have a fundamental knowledge of the process, these outlets, its cost. It is also necessary to ensure that the material could be colonized by bacteria, algae, shells in order to melt permanently in the natural environment. "

The introduction of the Geocorail would offer an alternative to reinforcement and resuscitation in an emergency.
The Geocorail is still in the in situ test phase: a first 300 square meter pilot project has been underway since May 2015 in Châtelaillon-Plage in Charente-Maritime and the company has just moved from Paris to Marseille in order to have a test bench in the Mediterranean. But the project was attractive: during COP21, Géocorail had its stand in good stead. "We had good contacts with Nicolas Hulot, Albert de Monaco and Kathryn Sullivan, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ..."

Do not get carried away without hiding your ambitions, this is the credo of Philippe Andréani. "We are happy to be a French company even if we want to go quickly internationally. In France, there is a lot to do and we would of course be very proud to work on anti-erosion plans but the authorizations take a long time. And there are opportunities elsewhere: the Florida Keys, the artificial islands in the gulf.

C’est une idée qui commence à faire son chemin et attire en tout cas les investisseurs. Une société parisienne a mis au point un procédé écologique pour lutter contre l’érosion avec la création d’un matériau étonnant, le Géocorail.

C’est du corail, sans être du corail. Ça ressemble à du ciment mais ce n’est pas du ciment. Mais ce matériau mystérieux pourrait bien devenir un élément familier de nos littoraux. C’est en 2012 que le Géocorail est mis au point.

Ce « corail » est en réalité un agrégat de sédiments, de roches, de sable, de calcaire, créés par une réaction électrophysique (et non biologique comme le corail naturel). En somme, une sorte de « béton naturel », résume Philippe Andréani, directeur général de la société Géocorail. L’innovation de Géocorail, c’est simple comme une petite impulsion électrique.

(Photo : Géocorail) « Nous mettons dans le sable un grillage métallique, pas plus complexe qu’un grillage de type « cage à poules », que nous relions à une centrale électrique, explique-t-il. Le courant produit est de l’ordre du volt : on peut marcher sur le grillage sans rien sentir, c’est sans danger. L’action combinée des ions contenus dans l’eau de mer et du courant électrique permet de capter le calcium et le magnésium. Cela crée un dépôt sur le grillage. En maintenant le courant, la dalle s’épaissit grâce aux sédiments, au sable… »

Découvert par hasard

Le Géocorail a été découvert par hasard lors de travaux sur la protection cathodique, c’est-à-dire la protection des métaux contre la corrosion. Mais très vite, l’intérêt du matériau s’est révélé dans la lutte contre l’érosion du littoral. « Renforcer des digues, des bas de falaises, des ouvrages d’arts, devient indispensable avec le réchauffement climatique et donc le phénomène de dilatation des océans et les phénomènes météo plus violents. Nous espérons apporter un outil supplémentaire pour préserver nos côtes. » Un outil bienvenu tant de nombreuses communes se sont engagées dans une véritable fuite en avant pour renforcer leurs digues dans l’urgence à chaque tempête.

Le Géocorail s’inscrit sur le long terme. Il faut douze à dix-huit mois pour générer une dalle de Géocorail grâce à ce procédé très respectueux de l’environnement. « Nous n’utilisons pas de produits chimiques, pas de barges ni de tractopelles pour les installations, vante Philippe Andréani. Et contrairement au ciment dont la fabrication produit beaucoup de CO2, le Géocorail piège et stocke le carbone. » De plus, le Géocorail a des propriétés auto-cicatrisantes et se régénère de lui-même au fil du temps.

Convaincre les clients

Avant de se lancer dans l’industrialisation et la commercialisation du matériau, il faut le tester et convaincre. Financièrement, l’affaire semble bien partie. Géocorail a persuadé le fonds d’investissement Truffle Capital (cofondateur de Carmat, la société française qui a lancé le premier cœur artificiel) d’investir 2 millions d’euros dans le projet. La société de capital-risque a même fait jouer son entregent : l’ancien ministre de l’Industrie Éric Besson et l’académicien Erik Orsenna viennent tout juste d’entrer au conseil d’administration de la jeune entreprise. Un signe que le projet suscite la confiance des investisseurs. Reste à attirer les clients.

« Le développement commercial n’est pas encore lancé, tempère Philippe Andréani. Nous voulons avoir une connaissance fondamentale du procédé, de ces débouchés, de son coût. Il faut aussi s’assurer que le matériau pourrait être colonisé par des bactéries, des algues, des coquillages afin de se fondre définitivement dans l’environnement naturel. »

L’introduction du Géocorail offrirait une alternative au renforcement et au réensablement dans l’urgence.

Ne pas s’emballer sans cacher ses ambitions, c’est le credo de Philippe Andréani. « Nous sommes contents d’être une entreprise française même si nous souhaitons aller rapidement à l’international. En France, il y a beaucoup à faire et nous serions bien sûr très fiers d’œuvrer aux plans anti-érosion mais les autorisations prennent beaucoup de temps. Et il y a des débouchés ailleurs : l’archipel des Keys en Floride, les îles artificielles dans le golfe Persique… »
