Richard Barnes Mason was a career officer in the United States Army and the fifth military governor of California before it became a U.S. state. He came from a politically prominent American family and was a descendant of George Mason.

He is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in Block 114, Lot 77.
Honors: In 1882, the Post at Point San Jose in San Francisco, California, was renamed Fort Mason in his honor, and served as an Army base for more than 100 years. There is also a Mason Street in downtown San Francisco.

From Find A Grave-US Army Brigadier General, California Governor. Born in Fairfax County, Virginia, he was commissioned an officer in the 1st US Infantry in 1817 and served in the Black Hawk War. He was promoted Colonel during the Mexican-American War and served in New Mexico Territory. Following the war, he was appointed Brigadier General and the sixth military Governor of California, serving from 1847 to 1849.
