KO CUTZ Barbershop opens downtown location at 210 College Avenue.

HOLLAND — It’s a new chapter for KO Cutz Barbershop.
The shop — previously located at 157 W. 29th St. — has reopened on College Avenue in downtown Holland.
“When I graduated from barber school, I knew I wanted a spot downtown,” said owner Johnny Garcia. “But there wasn’t anything available. We found the location on 29th Street, which is close to where I live. But my wife and I came to eat at [New] Holland Brewing Co. a few weeks ago and we saw a for-rent sign in the window of the storefront.”
Garcia called the building’s owner right away.
“He said his dad was a barber,” Garcia said. “It was super cool for him. He showed it to me and that was it. I signed the lease. I knew I wanted it.”
Garcia was a professional boxer for 10 years.
“Everybody in Holland kind of knew me,” he said. “I was getting ready to retire and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. A friend of my nephew had just finished barber school, so I called him up and asked him how to sign up. He gave me all of the information and, the next week, I started at Lansing Barber College.”
There are four barbers at KO Cutz. The shop is looking to rent out its final chair. Walk-in appointments are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
“We do require masks,” Garcia said. “We have a sanitizer station as soon as you walk in the door. Our chairs are all separated by six feet. We have three waiting chairs. Once those are full, we’re at capacity. But once a chair opens up, anyone is welcome to walk in.”
The storefront at 210 College Ave. was previously home to Kip’s Hotdogs. The restaurant closed its doors for good on Wednesday, April 15.
“The economic conditions caused by COVID-19 are just too much for our small restaurant to overcome,” read a post on the business’ Facebook page. “After many, many family conversations filled with hope, anger, frustration and tears, the reality became crystal clear to us that we could not continue.”
