From the Smithsonian Art data base:
Full-length portrait of Hippocrates. He wears a toga which is draped over his proper left shoulder. He wears sandals on his feet. He holds the folds of the draped toga against his chest with his proper left hand. His proper right hand rests on the top of a tree stump which stands behind him on the proper right side. A snake is coiled around the tree stump; its head rises up between the figure's arm and torso. There is a bowl on top of the tree stump. The white marble sculpture stands on a rectangular base of grey stone, possibly granite.

Remarks:
The sculpture was a gift to the University from Mr. and Mrs. John N. Pappas and was donated in 1978. The sculpture is made from marble from the mountain of Penteli in Greece. IAS files contain copy of related April 20, 1979 University press release and copies of related articles from New California Hellenic, July 14, 1977 and April 26, 1979.
