This information board about the Fourmile Creek Watershed is located next to the parking lot for the Wintergreen Gorge hiking trails near Fourmile Creek in Harborcreek, Pennsylvania. The sign has a map depicting the course of the creek, along with information about watersheds in general and the Fourmile Creek watershed in particular. The sign includes the following information:

What is a Watershed?
A watershed is a land area that directs all rainfall and snowmelt into a particular creek, stream, or river, eventually leading to an outlet point such as a lake.

Which Watershed am I in?
You are in the Fourmile Creek Watershed, which is a sub-watershed of the Lake Erie Watershed. Water in this area drains to Fourmile Creek and subsequently flows to Lake Erie.

Pollutants Flow Downstream
When it rains, stormwater run-off carries pesticides, road salt, nutrients, sediments, and other substances to Fourmile Creek and the water bodies it flows into: Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Downstream Impacts
The nutrients, salts, and pesticides that drain to Lake Erie have detrimental effects. High nitrogen content causes algae blooms, salts cause salinization of freshwater habitat, and pesticides and other chemicals threaten the health of organisms that ingest them. These impacts can be hundreds of miles from the source!

How Can You Help?
*Install Rain Gardens at Home to reduce stormwater run-off.
*Install Rain Barrels at Home to reduce stormwater run-off.
*Limit Fertilizer and Salt Use at Home to protect water quality. Follow the directions found on your chemical product.
*Dispose of Waste Chemicals Properly to protect water quality.
*Stay on the Trail to limit erosion.
