The Gilmer Rifles
A confederate company organized at Glenville in May 1861 by Rev. John E. Mitchell, the group only had 45 hunting rifles and no uniforms. Mitchell was replaced by J.S. Kerr McCutcheon just before the formal mustering of the company into the 31st Virginia Infantry. As company D, the Gilmer Rifles took part in actions at Laurel Hill, the Battle of Greenbrier, and Monterey.
