On July 4th a Grevy's Zebra was born at Tucson's Reid Park Zoo. Both mom and the male foal are doing well.

While fireworks lit up across Southern Arizona on July 4, Reid Park Zoo experienced its own fireworks after its Grevy's zebra, Anna gave birth to a male foal that Saturday.

Back in January, Reid Park Zoo announced it will add another adorable member to its family in the spring when its veterinary staff discovered that Anna was pregnant.

On Saturday, Anna and her mate, Ben welcomed the little star with stripes to the world.

“We are excited about the foal’s arrival, as he adds to the other African species born this spring at the Zoo including our 5 meerkat pups and elephant calf, Penzi,” said Dr. Sue Tygielski, Director of Zoo Operations. “It is fascinating to watch each mother and how they manage their offspring. Anna is a patient and attentive mom.”

Reid Park Zoo said both Anna and the baby zebra are currently in good health. The foal was said to be standing and feeding about an hour after he was born.

Anna and Ben were introduced to the zoo last spring as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.
