From Find A Grave: U.S. Senator, Maryland Governor. He attended the Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., graduated from College of New Jersey, studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in 1823. He was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates (1832-35) Whig presidential elector in 1836, appointed president of the executive council 1836 and a member of the Maryland State Senate, (1838-43). In 1845, he was elected the 27th Governor of Maryland, serving until 1848. After his term, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate in 1849 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Reverdy Johnson, serving two terms until 1857. An unsuccessful candidate for another re-election to the United States Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 65.
