Located along Interstate 10, Bowie is best known for the amenities provided to travelers. It first appears on the census of 1910 with a population of 546. As of 2010, 449 people remain in the area. There is a large pistachio orchard and a vineyard that provide some employment opportunities. Otherwise this is a thoroughly rural area. The top attraction in Bowie is listed as Dwayne's Brisket Jerky.
The climate is high desert at 3700'. It is very dry with cold nights in the winter but many days well above 100 degrees F in the summer.
