The Saimaa canal starts in Lappeenranta and the Mälkiä closure is the first of the closures. Its elevation height (12,4 m) is the largest. Mälkiä also has a remote access center for the closures of the entire Saimaa canal. The lock is used by cargo ships and many passenger ships.
Near the lock of the Mälkiä is an old canal with a museum, a park and a memorial statue. The car park has information on the canal and its history.
