The Centenary of the Lonan Parish Commissioners was marked by the installation of a bench on a view point looking south over the Parish a short distance from Lonan Parish Church.
The Parish of Lonan was established by enactment of the Local Government Act 1984.
The Local Government Amendment Act 1984 established boards of Parish Commissioners in 17 parish districts, including Patrick, "each of which comprised so much of the corresponding ancient parish as was not comprised in a town or village district." (visit link)
The 1984 Act had its origins in the Local Government Bill 1892 which "proposed that every Sheading should be a local government district, with ex officio commissioners comprising the member of the House of Keys for the time being for the sheading, the captains of the parishes and the chairman of the school committees within the sheading. Town or village districts, existing or subsequently established, would have their own elected commissioners. The Governor would appoint a public health inspector for the whole Island, exclusive of Douglas. This officer was to report to the Governor who would communicate the report to Tynwald and the local bodies. As the sheading commissioners would not be elected bodies, any-rate levied by them on the whole or part of their district was to be subject to the approval of Tynwald.
The Legislative Council thought that a sheading district was too small for vigorous executive action and too large for ascertaining and reporting upon particular defects, and amended the Bill to provide for elected commissioners for each parish, reporting to a Local Government Board, over which the Lieutenant Governor was to preside." It was the Bill in this amended form which was enacted in 1894. (visit link)
