On the Wellerondom you can admire the pillory, where people who had committed a less serious crime had to put their heads, hands and sometimes feet through. The punished were thus exposed to the scorn and the shouting (and rotten eggs and vegetable waste, for example) of passers-by who were willing to walk down a street to participate in the execution of the sentence imposed. The duration of the sentence imposed on a shopkeeper or adulterous 'housewife' messing with his merchandise could vary from a few hours to several days.

Perhaps people were also put to shame, who defied the prohibition of October 16, 1696, when the Brielse Maas, in the middle of the 9-year War, was terrorized by an enemy hijacker.

On that day it was decided to issue a ban against 'the walking of horses, cow animals, sheep and explorations along the Lord's streets, demolitions, at the ramparts, parapets, kerchoves, on the city high dike, buoying canals and roads there is freedom in responding. " For clarity, the clerk noted in the margin: "Ban pigs etc. to walk along the street".
It is not entirely inexplicable that pigs were no longer welcome in the Briel cemeteries around Catherijnekerk and Pieterskerk. Babe and his peers can root in the ground quite a bit with their nose. And if that sensitive nose smells a piece of rotting meat, they will keep digging and digging until the tasty snack for the pigs is reached. The current cattle grid has therefore been invented as a means of keeping pigs from graveyards. The grate had the added benefit of not allowing the devil's goat's legs to step over it, so he couldn't reach the church.
