The Deming National Guard building, now occupied by the museum, was constructed in 1916. At that time the United States was involved in an undeclared war with Mexico and on the verge of entry to WWI. The building served as a USO during the wars supporting local military training bases. The museum was established in 1977 when the building was purchased from the state. It has been recognized as the best museum in New Mexico. The exhibits range from an outstanding collection of indigenous pottery to early ranching history and the involvement of the citizens of Deming in WWII.
