Historic May Day Tree (Tree is on the right side of City Hall)

This tree, Prunus padus "commutala" (European Bird Cherry),
known locally as a Mayday tree, once grew at the First Avenue
home of Louis Black, (b.1866-d.1957).

Martha was called the Yukon's First Lady. She climbed the Chilkoot
in 1898, was mistress of Dawson's City's Government House from
1912-1916 and Yukon's member of Parliament from 1935-1940.
She was the first Yukon and second Canadian woman Member
of Parliament. The tree was moved to this location as a tribute
to her memory. The tree was given to the Black's by Mayo
resident Simon (Sam) Mason Wood.
