Medieval Misericords - St Stephen - Sneinton - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire - Wooden Church Artefacts on Waymarking.com

The misericords in St Stephen's church, Sneinton, are medieval, and when raised, reveal carved figures. They include:
a rat riding a hound and blowing a hunting horn,
a monkey hold a begging cup,
a “green man”,
a goat licking its back,
a lion,
a unicorn (or donkey)
a cat with a rat or mouse in its mouth,
a human head with curled beard and hair.

They were removed from St Mary’s Church Nottingham in about 1848 as part of that church’s restoration. A local banker, who was also organist in this church (Mr W H Wilcockson) purchased them for ten shillings, and gave them to the church. When the present chancel was built in 1909, they were altered to form “return stalls”. There are two stories related to this purchase - One is that he saw them for sale in the local Sneinton Market; the other that he spotted them on a pile of builders’ rubbish in St Mary’s Churchyard.
