Description:
From Find A Grave: United States Army General. A 1932 graduate of the United States Military Academy, he served with the 29th Infantry until 1936, the 15th Infantry until 1940, and the 63rd Infantry in 1944. He commanded the 351st Infantry in Italy from 1951 to 1952, the 2nd Armored Division from 1958 to 1959, and III Corps from 1959 to 1960. He held staff positions throughout most of his 38-year career, serving as an instructor, a member of the US Constabulary in Germany from 1947 until 1949, and a staffer in various NATO positions until 1955. In 1960, he became the Director of the Joint Staff and was named the Chief of Staff of the Army in June, 1962. With limited command and combat experience, he became the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1964; a post he held through most of the Vietnam Conflict, until his retirement in June, 1970. He died of heart failure traveling from his home in West Virginia to Walter Reed Army Hospital.
