Description:
From Find A Grave: United States Army General. Being commission an officer after graduating from U.S. Military Academy West Point in 1915, his first active duty assignment was at Eagle Pass, Texas, where he accompanied General Pershing and the 3rd Infantry Regiment in pursuit of Poncho Villa. During World War I, he served as a Major in command of the 17th Machine Gun Battalion in France. After the war, he was assigned to the 6th Division and held several ROTC assignments. With the advent of World War II, he was a Colonel in command of the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, leading up to his Division’s landing on Utah Beach France on D-Day June 6, 1944. As a Brigadier General, he was commander of 4th and 90th Infantry Divisions, in actions at Metz, the Moselle and Saar Rivers and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war ended, as a Lieutenant General, he was commander of the Joint US Military Advisory Group which provided operational advice to the Greek military in their battle with the Communist insurgents. Promoted to full General in 1951, he took command of the 8th U.S. Army and U.N. forces, until the end of the Korean War. He retired from the Army on March 31, 1953. when President Harry Truman described him as being "the greatest general we have ever had.” In 1961, President John F. Kennedy called him to active duty to survey the National Guard and Special Service Forces units. He lived in retirement on his ranch in Florida until his death.
