This statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, is located at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Mother of God, near Saegertown, Pennsylvania. The shrine was established in 1954 as a memorial to the innocent victims of abortion by the Catholic Federation of Area Churches. The shrine is located about 1.5 miles south of Saegertown, PA, and includes the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, two statues of angels, and a kneeler for prayer.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is the mother of Jesus, and therefore the Mother of God, to which this shrine's name refers. When the Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, France in 1858, she referred to herself as the Immaculate Conception. This dogma of the Immaculate Conception is the teaching of the Catholic Church, proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in 1854, that Mary was conceived without original sin. The feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8th and is a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States.
