Description:
From Find A Grave: United States Army General. Daring World War II field commander. Commanded artillery units in the operations in Sicily, and led the 101st Airborne division in the ill-fated Operation Market-Garden and the 1945 push into Germany. Served as West Point superintendent (1945- 1949), commanded the US Eighth Army in Korea and was Army Chief of Staff from 1955 until his retirement in 1959. He was later made Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He held that office during the Cuban Missile crisis. He advised President John F. Kennedy to use selective air strikes to eliminate Soviet missiles.
