Long Description:
Under the
Midnight Sun
Created by
Rick Taylor, 1998

Beside the south-facing door of the Visitor Information Centre.

This sculpture was commissioned by the Yukon Outfitters Association as a gift from hunters who visit Yukon. Creation of the statue was funded through the sale of 100 small maquettes purchased by non-resident hunters. (Their names are listed on the plaque accompanying the piece.) The sculpture was made in the image of a former world- record holding ram that was guided by Yukon outfitter Alex Van Bibber.

Inscription from a plaque on site:

This monument is a tribute to all guides
and outfitters, past and present, whose
noble endeavours have enabled many people
to experience the wilderness.

In 1948, American Sportman Dr. Earl Thee
and guide outfitter Alex van Bibber of
Champagne, Yukon, went hunting for Dall
sheep (Ovis Dalli), a common and plentiful
resident of these wild mountains. Near the
Dezadeash Range they took a specimen whose
horns were recorded as the world's largest
in the 1952 edition of the Boone and Crockett
Club.

Alex continues his guiding to this day, and
with his wife Sue are legendary figures in
the colourful history of the Yukon Outfitters Association.
