This statue of Saint George is located outside of Saint George Church on Peach Street in Erie, Pennsylvania. The statue depicts St. George dressed as a soldier, thrusting a spear into a dragon under his feet.
Saint George was a Roman soldier who was martyred under the Emperor Diocletian for adhering to the Christian faith. A popular legend sprung up through the centuries of St. George slaying a dragon, and he is therefore often depicted fighting a dragon. He is the patron saint of England and his feast day is celebrated on April 23rd.
