The Oklahoma City Boat Club is a private sailing club, with facilities on the east side of Lake Hefner south of the Hefner Lighthouse.
Sailing and boating enthusiasts formed the Oklahoma City Yacht Club (as it was first called) on Lake Overholser in 1930. A popular sailboat of that era was the
Snipe and several members of the club were active in racing the Snipe and other small centerboard boats such as the
Flying Scot. The completion of
Lake Hefner in 1947 provided a much larger sailing lake and the Club moved there soon afterwards, and at some point changed their name to the Oklahoma City Boat Club. Lake Hefner is at nearly the highest elevation in the county and the high Oklahoma winds often made centerboard sailing difficult, and as a result many club members adopted keelboats. The Club has seen any number of popular boats come and go over the last several decades.
The OCBC sponsors a number of events throughout the year and holds well-attended "Wednesday Night Races" throughout the sailing season (May through September). More can be found about the history and the current activities of the club at their web site, which is linked below.
