During the construction of the famous Jakobskirche (St. James Church) in Rothenburg, a master mason and his apprentice were each tasked with building one of the towers. The master built the South Tower and the apprentice built the North Tower. As the story goes, the North tower was taller, more slender and more elegant appearing than the South Tower. When the master realized that his apprentice's work was superior to his own, he killed himself by jumping off of his tower. His faithful dog was also atop the tower that day and after watching his master plunge to his death, the dog also jumped off of the tower.

The dog is remembered as a gargoyle of a dog with a human face. The statue exists on the south side of the Church close to the South tower.
