Museo Colonial Charcas is managed by a university, Universidad Mayor de San Francisco Xavier.
It was created in 1939 by the initiative of Athenaeum of Chuquisaca Fine Arts and it's hosted in a house from the 17th Century, formerly owned by the family Fernández de Córdova and known as “Casa del Gran Poder” (house of the great power).
Its collection is not huge but it's very varied. It includes paintings from European Mannerist and baroque masters as well as from South American artists. It has on display silverware, sculptures as well as 17th to 19th century furniture.
Its focus, however in on archeology, folklore and ethnograph. It has about 3,000 artefacts, the oldest from 3,500 years ago.
